Jorvik’s Vikings Return to York
Learn about York in the 9th century at York’s wonderful Jorvik Viking Centre in Coppergate. The Jorvik experience is a faithful re-creation of a Viking street in Jorvik, the Viking name for York. A highlight of the visit is a guided-transporter tour through authentic dioramas depicting life, farming and work in Viking times. Many of the artefacts on display were recovered from a four year excavation of an early Viking settlement about 9 metres below today’s street level in the city centre. The excavation brought up parts of buildings, clothing and over 40,000 other archaeological items.
